Many of us are busy. We have families. We have jobs. We have hobbies. We have lives.
But in the midst of the business, can you take 37 seconds out of your busy day to make a phone call to support poverty-focused development aid (PFDA)?
The House Appropriations Committee proposal to cut 15-20% from the account that funds poverty-focused development aid still stands. This cut is disproportionately large, and would directly impact the lives of people in extreme poverty. Let your representative know that this isn’t okay with you!
If you don’t know what to say, here’s an example you can use:
“Hello my name is [your name], and I live in [your city]. As budget negotiations are ongoing I wanted to let Representative [your representative] know that I care deeply reducing the deficit, but not at the expense of live saving programs that help people in extreme poverty. As a Christian, I am opposed to cuts to poverty-focused development aid.”
Simple. Easy. But your phone call makes an impact! The people answering the phone make a tally of every single call they receive and weekly summaries are given to each representative.
They will take your name, but this should cause you no apprehension. They will also ask you where you are from within their district and might ask for a phone number. Speak slowly. Give them a chance to write all the information down correctly. If you would like, you can also give a personal anecdote of why you care about PFDA.
Then the call is over. Less than 1 minute. That’s all it takes. How do I know? I just called my representative’s office. The entire call lasted 37 seconds. 37 seconds to let Representative Schrader know that I stand with those in extreme poverty. You aren’t doing this alone.
To show you how easy it is, Jason called his Representative as well, and we recorded it for you to watch.
Your member of Congress wants to hear from you. They want to know what you believe is important. They are elected into office to represent you. To find out who your member of Congress is in order to make the call, click here.
